March Tennis Club

Members' Ladder

For members who enjoy some friendly competition, we offer two LADDERS... One for Beginners and one for Intermediate/Advanced players.

Members of each ladder play against each other, working their way toward the top by challenging other players who are ranked similarly to themselves. If they win, they move up.

We ask all members to sign up for only one of the two ladders. If you are a new/beginner-level player, choose the Beginners Ladder. If you are not a new/beginner-level player, choose the Intermediate/Advanced ladder.

The beauty of a tennis ladder is that it allows players of similar ability to challenge one another and challenge better players as they improve and move up the rankings.

Our tennis ladder web application manages the ladders. There will be a $20 administrative fee to participate in the ladder to help cover the cost of this application. This fee will appear in your MTC CourtReserve account and on your next invoice.

Ladder rules

1.  You can issue only 1 challenge at a time.

2. You can only be challenged by one player at any given time. This prevents outstanding challenges from accumulating against you.

3. You may challenge up 5 “available” spots and down 10 “available” spots. If there is not a player available within these parameters, you will be able to challenge the next player in line.  (When ladder activity is high, we may adjust these numbers temporarily to give members more opportunity to play.)

4. The winner of  the match should enter the score as soon as possible after the conclusion of the match so that you and your partner will become available for your next challenge. The score of a tie break match should be entered as ONLY the score of the tie break, with that score in parenthesis.  For example, if the tie break score was 10-8, this would be entered as (10-8).

5. The ladder uses a bump ranking system. Lets say Joe is ranked #16 and he challenges Tom who is ranked #2. If Joe wins, he will become #2, and Tom will become #3.  If Joe loses both players stay where they are.  In order to move up on the ladder, you must challenge someone higher than you and then win that match.

6. You must wait 3 days before re-challenging the same player.

7. All ladder matches are a pro set: the winner is the first to 8 games with a regular tie break at 7-7. The score of a tie break match should be entered as ONLY the score of the tie break with that score in parenthesis.  For example, if the tie break score was 10-8, this would be entered as (10-8).

8. When you are challenged, you will have 2 days to “Accept” or “Deny” the challenge or the challenge will be considered a “forfeit” and the challenger will be granted the win.

9. The challenger should arrange the match date and time via email or telephone, and reserve the court time on CourtReserve as soon as possible after the challenge is accepted.

10. By accepting a challenge, you agree to play the challenge within 7 days after the date of acceptance.

11.  If you cannot play within 7 days, simply “Deny” the challenge and the challenger will be rewarded the win and can move on.

12. If a challenge is accepted and not played within 7 days, it will expire and the challenge will be deleted from the system and will have to be re-issued. Of course, since rankings continually change, a re-challenge may not be possible.

13. If you are unable to play for a period of time (injured, vacation, business trip), please log on to your account and click on “Temporarily Leave Ladder”.  This will prevent other members from issuing challenges to you while you are away.  Be sure to re-join the active ladder by logging on and clicking “Come Back” when you are ready to resume play.  In order to "Come Back", you must log on from a computer, this cannot be done from the mobile app.

14. All ladder matches must follow the same booking procedures as other MTC matches.

15. If you are active on the ladder but have no playing activity: after 21 days you will be dropped 5 spots, after 42 days you will be dropped 5 more spots and after 63 days you will be dropped from the ladder.

16. When you join the ladder, you are placed at the bottom and must work your way up. If you believe you should be higher, no worries because then you should be able to work your way up!!!!!

17. Your ladder admin is Terry Atwood and can be emailed at [email protected] if you have any questions.
